About the ARK Project

The ARK Projecis a school-based McKinney-Vento support program serving children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability throughout Coos County, Oregon. Our drop-in center provides a welcoming, supportive space where families can access basic necessities, advocacy, crisis intervention, school support, community referrals, and connections to local resources. The ARK Project works collaboratively with schools, families, and community partners to help reduce barriers that may impact school attendance, educational stability, and academic success. Our support services are designed to assist students and families in accessing resources that promote student well-being, stability, and continued engagement in school.

Summer Drop-in Hours: Tuesday – Wednesday | 1:00pm -5:00pm

If you or your family are living in:

  • Emergency or transitional shelters
  • Motels, RV Parks, or campgrounds
  • Vehicles, parks, abandoned building, or other temporary locations
  • Shared housing due to economic hardship or loss of housing
  • Temporarily displacement due to fires, floods, natural disasters, or other emergency situations
  • Substandard or unsafe living conditions, including lack of utilities or sanitation
  • Or unaccompanied youth living without a parent or guardian in any of the situations listed above

 

Then you may be qualified for servies such as:

  • Laundry services and showers
  • Emergency food pantry access
  • Hygiene supplies
  • School supplies
  • Access to donated clothes
  • Tutoring & homework help
  • Assistance navigating community resources
  • Help with school related fees for K-12 students
  • Information and assistance with school transportation 

Homeless Education/Foster Care

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law guaranteeing all children and youth the right to an equal education, regardless of their living situation. Protection under the McKinney-Vento Act extends to those who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

    • Sharing housing with friends, relatives, etc. due to the loss of housing, natural disaster, hardship, etc.
    • Living in a motel, trailer park, or campground due to the lack of alternative accommodations
    • Living somewhere not designed for human occupation
    • In shelters or substandard housing
    • In the above situation and not in the custody of an adult guardian
    • Immediate enrollment, regardless of documentation, immunizations, etc.
    • Automatic eligibility for free/reduced lunch
    • Transportation to their school of origin (consistency in education)
    • Comparable education to all other students
